Making a statement on the occasion of the 24th anniversary of the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake, Yavuz Işık, President of Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association, said, “Following the Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, we saw the importance of the fact that not only the risky structures, but also the way of doing business and the mentality in all processes from production to design, from design to implementation, and from implementation to inspection should be transformed.”
Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association (THBB), which has been working for the production of concrete in accordance with the standards in Turkey and for ensuring correct concrete applications in construction since 1988, once again reminded the reality of earthquakes on the 24th anniversary of the earthquake that took place on 17 August 1999. Mentioning the works carried out after the 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake, Yavuz Işık, President of Turkish Ready Mixed Concrete Association, said, “The 17 August 1999 Marmara Earthquake was imprinted in our memories as the most tragic event of our recent history. Following the earthquake, the entire Turkey united to ensure the healing of the wounds fast. Many institutions determined the existing deficiencies and mistakes and created the necessary action plans in order not to experience similar pains again. In that process, we witnessed that the Earthquake Regulation and related standards were updated, the Earthquake Council was convened, the Building Inspection System was spread throughout Turkey, and the ready mixed concrete inspections were conducted more strictly with the Electronic Concrete Monitoring System. These developments were of course extremely positive for the newly constructed buildings, but the desired level in the conversion of 6,8 million risky residences could not be attained and there is still a very serious amount of building stock built before 2000 in our country.”
